The history of burying a Saint Joseph statue upside down to sell or buy a home dates back to the 1500’s. A group of nuns wanted to purchase a beautiful convent in Italy so they would pray to Saint Joseph because of his known talent as a home craftsman. The nuns buried a small statue of Saint Joseph in front of the convent and the petition was granted. The legend spread through out Europe and many countries in the world and lives on to this day. His feast day is celebrated on May 1st.
